The President's Corner By Bud Hughes K4CWG

Thanks to your prayers for Sherry, my bride of 53 years, her operation performed at Jess Parrish Medical Center went well. She is now at and home resting. I have assumed some of the household chores. I am learning the routine of house cleaning, vacuuming, washing clothes etc. Now at the age of 39+ I have acquired a greater respect for the heretofore unknown countless chores that our ladies perform day after day in maintaining our homes.

In the art of housekeeping, as a result of smoke in the kitchen, burnt toast, hard-hard boiled eggs ruined TV Dinners, white shirts that now have a distinguished pinkish tint to them, spotted color clothes, which I found out does not need bleach I am beginning have learned there are certain measurements, temperatures, timing, how much bleach is enough, when not to use bleach, which materials may be washed together, which materials better not be washed together, proper temperature settings for frying and or boiling eggs and yes the timing necessary just to reheat a cup of coffee in the microwave. The lists of do's and don'ts seem to go on forever.

I am however encouraged that one thing that I have learned is that our smoke alarm system works very well and until just recently the batteries did not need replacing.

Maybe one of the ladies would entertain the idea of writing a book for those of us who need to be enlightened and become proficient in the great art of homemaking.

We are now in the early stages of the 2006 hurricane season. I trust that when our club is called on to assist in providing communications between the EOC and the evacuations centers and or any other EOC request we will volunteer to serve our community just as we have in so many years gone by.

For our club members who are away for the summer we have finally received some precipitation. Some times it may not be in our best interest to endure a storm just to get rain but thanks to the first major storm of the season, Alberto, we have received approximately 2 inches of rain. We are expecting more rain before the storm moves out of Florida. We hope the drought is over.

A reminder to the TARC Board of Directors our 3rd Quarterly Board Meeting will be held 7/18/06 at 7:PM.

Our next club meeting is 6/27/2006 and will be held at the North Brevard Library on Hopkins just South of the Titusville High School. Come and bring a friend with you.

Best wishes, Bud K4CWG

Abell's Anecdotes By Pike Abell W4EPU

It happened several years ago, back when CB radio first became a popular means of communications among highway travelers.

It was a military family of five. Mother, father and three children ages 4,6, and 8.

The father, who was stationed on the west coast, was transferred to a base in the New York City area.

He went ahead to his new assignment, leaving his wife and children behind until he could arrange housing and all.

After he notified her that everything was ready, she and the children traveled across country by car. After a few hours on the road, they stopped for lunch at a truck stop restaurant. During lunch she engaged in a conversation with some truck drivers sitting at an adjacent table. She told them about her planned trip and even gave them a general idea of the route she would be taking.

On the third day of their journey, somewhere in Ohio, she left the main highway and traveled to a nearby town to visit friends and stayed there for several days.

They finally left their friends and continued their journey. They had only traveled a few miles when an eighteen wheeler truck approached close behind them. He then dropped back and stayed a safe distance several hundred feet behind. The lady could not help but notice that the trucker was obviously following her. For that she was somewhat concerned. The truck kept pace with her for several miles until she stopped at a rest area. The truck likewise stopped. The truck driver, in fact, approached her in the parking lot and said to her, "Ma'am, you had us all worried. Where have you been? Truckers along this route reported you missing several days ago. We have been looking for you everywhere ever since..."

Only then did she realize that truck drivers along the route were actually escorting her across country, making sure she and her children had a safe and trouble free journey. They kept each other informed of her welfare and whereabouts all along the way by CB radio communications.

Field Day 2006

TARC has reserved shelter #2 at Fox Lake Park for this year's Field Day activities. Everyone is invited to bring their portable equipment and their appetites bright and early on Saturday June 24th. The club has voted to dedicate the event to John Reninger KE4ZPA who was a mainstay at Field Day for many years.

The main course will be a potluck picnic lunch which will be spread around noon. Bring food and a friend. We're gathering at Fox Lake to give the general public a chance to see ham radio in action.

Weather Watching

With the arrival of the 2006 Hurricane season and the early appearance of Tropical Storm Alberto, our interest in the weather has come into sharper focus. There are several spots on the Internet we can recommend.

First, there is the club website www.titusvillearc.org. If you scroll down the page you'll find a whole list of weather items on the right side of the page. My favorite is Lightning Tracker. This is a product of the full scale weather station operated by Wayne Morehouse W4GBW. The tracker shows where the lightning is occurring and how often. That is an excellent indicator of the fury of the weather. Also available is W4GBW's Merritt Island WX which is full of current and historic weather data.

The best radar picture is available at www.intellicast.com. Click on US Radar to see the big picture. If you then click on the state of Florida in the map, you get a great local radar. You can put the storms in motion by clicking "Start Looping" at the top of the picture.

If you want to see that the weather experts use for predicting the path of Tropical Storms and Hurricanes, I recommend www.wunderground.com. First, you click on "Tracking Map" to see the official prediction from the National Hurricane Center. Then you click on "Computer Models." This will show several possible tracks for the storm. It's fascinating to see the experts argue on where the storm will go.

June Meeting Minutes By Cathy Johnson KI4GMF

On May 23rd TARC held its monthly meeting. Due to a power outage at the library our meeting was conducted using the emergency lighting of the library and a few flashlights. It reminded me of being in a hurricane shelter. The meeting was greatly abreviated. We did have a discussion of existing nets. They are friendship net-Tues 6:30 on146.91, vip net-Thurs 10:00on146.91, bathrob net Wed 7:00 on28.333, and redeye net Sun 6:00 on7.228. There was also a reminder that Field day will be held on Sat. June 24th at Fox Lake Park.
