The Vice Squad By Jose` Ramos KC4VIO

A feast is a feast is a feast and a feast it was! And you really missed a great one if you were not at the last meeting's Pot luck dinner. Various salads, turkey, ham, stuffing and gravy, several breads, beets, Cajun rice, candied sweet potatoes, deviled eggs, casseroles and a fire alarm chili that made you come back for more and then run for your life. Drinks were plenty and the dessert table rounded up the evening. Most important was the camaraderie shared by all present. As hard as it is to please everyone, I believe it was done this time. Kudos go to the providers and to the eaters as well.

The November meeting will give you the opportunity to choose next year's officers by casting your ballot. All positions are open. Several names are already on the slate and nominations will be taken from the floor. This is your chance to make a difference in OUR club.

I have been privileged to be your Vice for this year but for personal reasons will not run again for the next one. I have served my time, now it is YOUR turn. Hasta la vista amigos, Jose` KC4VIO

Abell's Anecdotes By Pike Abell W4EPU

Yet another trip report. Some of you may already know, a couple of months ago I was the recipient of the Governor's weekly "Points of Light" award. The following is a brief outline of what took place:

I received a letter from the Governor inviting me and up to three guests to the Governor's Mansion in Tallahassee to be presented the Points of Light award. I chose my 13 year old granddaughter, Cassandra Abell; Kathy King, my Points of Light sponsor; and of course, my wife Clara, KE4YQL, as my guests.

We drove to Tallahassee the morning of October 18, the day of the ceremony, and checked in at the Cabot Lodge hotel where reservations had previously been made. We were picked up at the hotel at 5:00 P.M. by bus, and transported to the Governor's mansion. When we arrived, we were escorted into the mansion where a picture taking session was in progress. Each recipient, with their particular guests, was posed for an official photograph with the governor, Mrs. Bush, Lt. Governor Toni Jennings and a representative from the host cruise lines. (The official photo will be mailed to each recipient. As of this writing we have not received our picture. The picture enclosed here, is an unofficial photo taken in the garden during the social portion of the ceremony.)

After the photo session, a lavish buffet was served in the garden under a large canopy set up in case of inclement weather. After the buffet, the governor made a congratulatory speech, then, he and the Lt Governor mingled with their guests for quite some time. We took advantage of this with unofficial photo opportunities and a chance to chat with the governor.

The governor and his party were very gracious hosts. In our conversations with Governor Bush, we learned that he has quite a sense of humor. For example: Clara told the governor that I worked for his dad, George Bush Sr., when he was director of the CIA. The governor asked me if I were still covert, to which I said "no". The governor then said with a big smile, "Good, because now I won't have to have you shot." (Obviously there were many security people present. I'm sure the ones within earshot perked up for a moment when they heard that statement.)

All too soon, it was time to board the bus and head back to the hotel, where a complimentary happy hour for the recipients and their guests, was in progress.

On the following day, other than the fact that the girls insisted on stopping at the Outlet Malls in St. Augustine to shop for a couple of hours, the trip back to Titusville was routine and uneventful.

In closing, I am happy to report that the entire affair was paid for with private contributions. Hotel accommodations, bus transportation, food and beverage were compliments of Royal Caribbean International and Celebrity Cruises who host and sponsor the event every year. Even our rental car was provided by a private contributor. 73s es 88s, Pike

Suit-Sat 1 is about to fly

Mark your calendar for December 8th. The Russians are tossing out a used (and outdated) space suit from the International Space Station. Some quick thinking hams have installed a two meter radio in the helmet and it should be broadcasting a clear signal as the suit slowly spirals down.

Gould Smith, WA4SXM, wrote a super article on the project which says in part:

This unusual amateur satellite is expected to have a lifetime of a few weeks, before it burns up re-entering the earth's atmosphere. SuitSat will transmit a 500 mW FM signal on 145.990 MHz. Special voice greetings made by young people will be transmitted in English, French, German, Spanish, Russian and Japanese to the youth and people of the world. Each greeting will last about 20 seconds followed by a 30 second period of no transmission. A single SSTV (Slow Scan TV) image in "Scotty I" format will be transmitted, as well as SuitSat telemetry data revealing the current elapsed time, temperature and battery voltage. The station ID will say "This is SuitSat 1 Amateur Radio station RS0RS." It will take approximately eight minutes to transmit the entire sequence, making it possible to copy all of the data during a single pass.

Kenwood donated a TH-K2AT handheld radio. The battery pack was removed and the radio mounted to a milled plate to dissipate heat. With a 20-second on, 30-second off duty cycle, the radio should generate some heat. The frequency was set to 145.990 MHz.

You can read all about it at www.amsat.org. The website includes some great pictures and details of how you may hear the SuitSat on your two meter rig. We're indebted to Lee McLamb KU4OS of Cocoa, the Executive Vice President of AMSAT, the Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation for tipping us off to this exciting event.

Hurricane Wilma Eight members of the Titusville Amateur Radio Club answered the call when the latest hurricane blew through the area. Club Emergency Coordinator Ed Wirth KG4KVO organized the effort and manned the EOC at the Titusville Police Department. While he was getting people and equipment distributed, Staphanie K4MVO kept the 146.91 repeater on the air as net control for an informal information net. Dependable regulars Alan KI4GOB, Cathy KI4GMF and Jimmy KF4ZOL stood watch at the Imperial Estates Elementary School shelter. Mike KG4PCK took up duties at Oak Park special needs shelter. When he needed to attend to personal demands, Bud K4CWG took over the mic for an all night stand (or more probably sit). When a line of tornados threatened the area, Bob W4YBI opened a SkyWarn net to gather reports as the twister danced up Interstate 95, hopped into downtown Cocoa, rolled into the Indian River and across the northern portions of Merritt Island. Our thanks to all who helped and all who offered to help.

OCTOBER MINUTES by KF4HTB Becky Lee

The October meeting is the clubs annual potluck dinner, and is purely a social meeting. President Bud Hughes K4CWG welcomed members and their guests and invited everyone to proceed to the buffet table. Sherry KU4ZO did her usual fine job on the ham, turkey and dressing. Also as usual the potluck dishes were delicious. Clara announced that the Christmas party will be held at Dixie Crossroads on December 15 at 6 PM. Contact Sherry to purchase your ticket.
