The President's Corner By Bud Hughes, K4CWG
With the exception of our Christmas party the "POT-LUCK DINNER" which will be held at 6:30 PM on the 25th of October just may be the highlight of the year.
This year like days of yore our ladies will prepare covered dishes or what ever suits their fancy. The club will furnish turkey, ham, sodas, tea, coffee plates, napkins forks, spoons etc. With the combined culinary skills of our ladies you surely do not want to miss this special occasion.
Once again I want to thank the efforts of so many of our members for their continued support of our club. A Special thanks to our auctioneer W4YBI Bob, in some quarters known as "Ringo", his bride Linda KG4YFN and all the supporters who assisted our man Bob in the auction as held a few weeks back. Mr. Bob was the auctioneer at the IRAC "White Elephant" sale. Bob, being a member of both clubs, is constantly sharing his good will and expert assistance to any and all who need him. Keep up the good work Bob.
Through John Adams K4JYX of Port Orange we learned of the demise of John Munsey KB3GK. Many of you will remember John as being Mr. Fox Hunter. John made many trips down to Titusville and promoted fox hunting in our area. For more than a year many of our club members would participate in foxhunting in Titusville then the next hunt would be in Daytona. Our condolences are extended to the family.
Oh what a joy this is October and yes many of our fellow friends and club members are beginning to come back and spend the winter with us. The upcoming season is going to be just wonderful with our gang back together.
Mrs. Renninger better known to us as Pat KF4LTY is home after eye surgery. So John you take good care of this lady and we all wish the two of you the very best.
Hope to see you at the 10/25/05 6:30 PM club Potluck Dinner meeting at the North Brevard Library.

The Vice Squad By Jose` Ramos KC4VIO
Did you miss our last meeting? Well you missed a humdinger! It was standing room only. We even ran out of snacks (a first time ever). Kim's, KG4YFP, presentation about lightning was enthusiastically received by all those present. There were many questions (and at times heated discussions) about how to protect our electronic equipment and indirectly ourselves from one of the most common weather related dangers in Florida. Kim explained the ideal ways for lightning protection. While the idea of surrounding our entire property with ground rods and grounding straps may not appeal to everyone, an adaptation to ones particular situation may at least give you some protection. As a minimum, grounding each leg of our towers would be a good start. His presentation was reinforced by showing awesome slides of lightning strikes. Mic, KI4CFA, and Taylor, KI4GMJ, assisted with the presentation by providing and operating the projection equipment.
Our next meeting will give you a break from Ham related presentations. You will have the opportunity to savor the cooking abilities of our club members and their spouses (or significant others) during our annual Pot Luck Supper. You sure do not want to miss that one. Bring a favorite dish and leave the calorie counter at home. See you there
Hasta la vista amigos, Jose` KC4VIO
Abell's Anecdotes By Pike Abell W4EPU
The Great Soap-on-a-Rope Caper - Gary's Secret
Several years ago this writer received soap-on-a-rope as a gift in the TARC Christmas party gift exchange. Not really having a use for it, at least the use for which it was intended, I kept it around for a couple of years. My wife, Clara, KE4YQL, and I, in one of our little discussions on such matters, decided it would be a good "special" gift for someone. At our Christmas party in 1993, knowing the late Cliff Hoag, KC4SYD, was a good sport and an active member of TARC, we faked a drawing, supposedly drawing Cliff's number. He thus became the second recipient of the soap.
Cliff, going along with the idea, with the same recipient qualifications as before being considered, passed it on to Dan, AD4VU, during our 1995 Christmas party. Thus a tradition was established and so on to the present time.
Gary, W4RBI, is the current proud owner. WHO WILL BE THE RECIPIENT THIS YEAR? No one except Gary knows! He is reluctantly willing to pass it on to some worthy person this year at our annual Christmas party. The selection process is already in progress. (If Gary seems to be bit over friendly with you - watch out.) Be certain, whoever it may be, the two basic requirements will be: A member of TARC who has never received it before and a good sport. Attend our annual Christmas party at Dixie Crossroads on Thursday, December 15 and witness this momentous event. Who Knows? The name on the plaque may be YOURS….
In regards to the TARC Christmas party: This year it will be held at Dixie Crossroads on Thursday, December 15. Sherry, KU4ZO, is hosting the event and Clara, KE4YQL, promises us a fun filled evening. We may even sing "The Twelve Days of Christmas" one more time just for Becky, KF4HTB. (big grin) We will definitely have the traditional $5.00 gift exchange, ladies for ladies and men for men, and, more importantly, announce the selection of the Ham of the Year. There will be some annual business taken care of, including the installation of our 2006 officers. We may even throw in a few surprises just to add a little spice to the event.

Another Gift Suggestion This newsletter and a great deal more are available on the Internet at www.titusvilleARC.org. Recently, a woman found that website through Google.Com and contacted the club.
Hi, I'm trying to find some information and I was wondering if someone could help. My brother's birthday is coming up and I know he is very interested in using a ham radio. I know I can't afford a true ham radio, but I thought maybe I could get him started with something related, like maybe a scanner. Is this a good idea? Do you have any suggestions on what brand to buy or any other valuable info? Maybe you have an idea about something I could get him other than a scanner that he would enjoy. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Shari Richards <velvet@earthlink.net>
Hi Shari, I'm Ozzie N4SCY, webmaster and postmaster for the Titusville Amateur Radio Club website. Here's my recommendation on "What To Get Someone Who Wants To Be A Ham." Ham Radio covers a lot of territory. If your brother is interested in the VHF/UHF frequency bands where the local repeaters and many space satellites are located (and where the radio signals only travel in "line of sight"), then a scanner would be something good to get him. If, however, he is more interested in the HF radio bands which cross continents and oceans, then a scanner will not fit his interests, and a Short Wave Receiver would be a better buy.
What I might suggest is a copy of QST MAgazine (the magazine of the American Radio Relay League, the national Ham Operator association), and either "Monitoring Times" magazine, or "Popular Communications" magazine, along with a gift certificate to Amateur Electronic Supply in Orlando to buy either radio with. The magazines will tell him where to find things to listen to, no matter which radio he gets. Take SR-50 East, and a mile past Semoran Blvd, take a left at the Burger King. That's how I always find it. AES is right behind the Burger King (the antennas on top are a Clue). The magazines can be purchased there as well.

If he gets a Scanner, have him tune up on 146.910 MHZ for our club repeater - anyone can listen to ham communications, you just need a license to talk on the frequency. Have him come by a Club Meeting at the Titusville Library (fourth Tuesday of the month). Also, AES will be happy to sell him the book, "Now You're Talking," with information he'll need for taking the exam to get a Ham License. We have some links to Practice Exams on the club web site, and he can call Bud Hughes K4CWG, the club president, when he's ready to take the test. Bud & his wife Sherry KU4ZO set up Test Sessions in Titusville. http://TitusvilleARC.Org/#test
I hope this helps. Ozzie N4SCY Robert Osband, Computerist
SEPTEMBER MINUTES by KF4HTB Becky Lee
The meeting was called to order by President Bud Hughes K4CWG. After the opening ceremonies of pledge, moment of silence, and introduction of members and guests, Bud told the members about the death of former member KU4NR Chuck Manion.
All recent new members were voted into the club. Sherry KU4ZO reminded the members that the October meeting is the annual pot luck supper. The club furnishes the ham and the turkey, dressing and gravy. Members are asked to bring a covered dish and their families to this informal social evening on Oct. 25 at 6:30. V. P. Jose Ramos KC4VIO introduced Kim Lucks KG4YFP who gave a most interesting program on Lightning - and how to protect your home and your equipment.
