The President's Corner By Bud Hughes, K4CWG

The Melbourne Hamfest held the weekend Sept. 10/11 was an occasion where many of us took the liberty of renewing acquaintances with old friends and made world decisions right there on the spot.

I am happy to report that thanks to the donations and the sales of miscellaneous ham equipment items our club treasure has been was enriched and we are thankful.

To Jean Young, KB4CAR, wife of our departed friend Bob N4DQT we extend our sincere thanks for the donation of the ham gear placed on the swap table and sold which contributed to the club's fund raising efforts.

I want to thank all of those who donated so many hours in the checkout, transporting and set up of the swap table then assisting in the sale of the equipment at the Melbourne Ham Fest.

During our weekend in Melbourne many friends of Les K4SJC came by and paid tribute to this wonderful gentleman.

Sherry and I enjoyed our week in Shelby, NC and the Hamfest there in the TARHEEL State. We were beginning to think we were going to have to mortgage our home just to buy gasoline just to get back home to Titusville. We were fortunate to have our son Carl KD4CBT his wife Janice, our Nephew Lewis WD4AYI and my Great Niece Kary W4ZS to meet us there and as a result that beautiful town of Shelby will never be the same.

Mark your calendar for our next club meeting 9/27/05 7:PM.

The Vice Squad By Jose` Ramos KC4VIO

You missed the chance of your life if you did not attend our last meeting. Our annual auction was a huge success, the bidding was fierce as everyone tried to grab bargains as the evening progressed. Sincere thanks to Captain Bob our star auctioneer, Ray who tried so hard to keep up with him as his assistant and Becky and Linda who kept the money straight. Sherry kept the refreshments going with the help of the many who brought in the goodies that we so much enjoy. Special kudos to all of you who were there, it could not have happened without you.

Have you ever lost equipment due to lightning? I did; three years ago at the tune of$3200. How many of you have had similar experiences? Do you wish you had taken the appropriate precautions? Well, we all feel the same way; it is not going to happen to me! Now is the time to do something about it. Our next meeting's mystery guest speaker will show you how to avoid being the next lighting victim. Do not miss it; the equipment you save may be your own. See you there.

Hasta la vista amigos, Jose` KC4VIO

Abell's Anecdotes By Pike Abell W4EPU

KATRINA:

Last year, after the hurricane season, I wrote in one article, about the four hurricanes that devastated Florida during that season. Likewise I planned on summarizing this season as well.

I took some notes on Hurricane Dennis, the first intense one of this season and waited for the next.

Then along came Katrina. She made landfall in South Florida between Ft. Lauderdale and Miami, as a category 1 hurricane. Because it was a relatively weak storm, folks in her path were not too concerned. What they didn't take into consideration was the large amount of rain, a foot or so, she dumped on South Florida including the Keys.

Anyway, she crossed Florida and churned up through the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, increasing in intensity as she goes. By the time she slammed into the Gulf shores of Mississippi, Louisiana, Alabama and Florida on August 29, 2005, she was a category five, packing wind speeds well over 150 mph and was rated among the most intense hurricanes ever to make landfall in the United States. The only other hurricanes comparable in intensity during the last 85 years were the unnamed hurricane of Labor Day 1935 in the Florida Keys; Camille, Galveston Texas, 1969; and Andrew, 1992, Homestead and across Southern Florida. All of the above were category 5 hurricanes

To round out, the six most intense hurricanes ever recorded to hit the United States: Number 5, Unnamed, 1919, Florida Keys and Texas;and number 6,Unnamed, 1928, Lake Okeechobee. Numbers 5 and 6 were both Cat. 4.

Just as a matter of interest, the most intense hurricane ever recorded in the Atlantic, Caribbean or Gulf of Mexico was Gilbert. He slammed into Jamaica on September 12, 1988 packing winds of 184 MPH.

At this point in time, a few days after Katrina, I am totally overwhelmed by the news coming out of the Gulf Coast area. I can not possibly even begin to report what has and is happening in that area during the storm and in the aftermath.

Sorry!!!

Hat's Off to Bill Hoskinson K4CUO

Longtime TARC member Bill Hoskinson K4CUO was honored recently by the Community Services Council of Brevard County for his many years of service as president. Under Bill's leadership, the council was honored in 2002 as Organization of the Year in Florida Today's Reaching Out Volunteer Recognition Awards. All told, Bill has given 27 years of helping the elderly and others through the Community Services Council.

TRADERS NET

Ray Hinkle W4TOO has stepped forward to revive the Traders Net on the 146.91 repeater. It's on the air now on Monday mornings at 10:30. Ray brings a great deal of enthusiasm and expertise to this net and members are encouraged to join in.

There's something for everyone in TARC's lineup of regular nets. They include:

Trader's Net 10:30AM Monday 146.91 Repeater

Friendship Net 6:30 PM Tuesday 146.91 Repeater

Mosquito Net 7:00 PM Wednesday 28.333 (10 meters)

VIP Net 10:00 AM Thursday 146.91 Repeater

Red Eye Net 6:00 AM Sunday 7.228 (40 meters)

While these nets are fun, they also serve as valuable training for emergency service and keep the gears oiled in case we need to call a SkyWarn Weather Net.

AUGUST MINUTES by KF4HTB Becky Lee

President Bud Hughes K4CWG called the meeting to order, and after the opening ceremonies, announced that since this was auction night, we would go right to auction.

He introduced Bob W4YBI who was the auctioneer. Bob - as usual - did a wonderful job, and successfully auctioned off a big chunk of the equipment. The leftovers will be taken to the Melbourne Hamfest. Bud announced that we have 3 tables there and told the members they could bring things there to be sold, but that they must pick up any unsold items at the close of the hamfest.

NOTE OF THANKS

To all TARC members,

I can't send this to every member as I don't know them all personally nor do I have access to each members address but I would just like to express my deepest, warmest, appreciation for the wonderful words about my dad in the news letter. I thank bob for sending me the link to go read it and I and my whole family were greatly moved by all the beautiful things in it. We all loved the poem, it certainly brought a tear to our eyes, and the beautiful memorials by Bud and Bill. I can't express how much it meant. the last sentence telling about having the memorial every day a 4pm was wonderful. I would also like to thank Mic for taking over the repeater but still keeping my dads memories there alive.

My dad was so fortunate to have such wonderful and caring friends. God Bless each and every one of you. With sincerest gratitude to all of you, Les Griner's family
