Sherry and I extend our sincere thanks to the TARC VEs
specifically Ed KG4KVO, Pat KF4LTY and John KE4ZPA for administering the Extra
Class exam to my niece Kary KI4IPY. Kary is the granddaughter of my recently
deceased older brother W4ZS. Kary has accomplished in just over three months
what it took me 35 years to achieve. Now we all know where the brains are in
the Hughes family. Kary having passed all elements required to become an Extra
class licensee and as a close relative of Harold Hughes W4ZS (deceased)
qualifies her to petition the FCC and request, through the Vanity System, the
Group A call sign W4ZS of her deceased grandfather.
Sherry and I have been honored for Kary and her dad Lewis WD4AYI
to drive down to Titusville from Pelham, Al. to have our TARC VE Team
administer her the Extra class exam. And yes they are now members of the
Titusville Radio Club.
We send our love and condolences to Marie N2USO in the loss of her
husband and our dear friend Lou N2CTQ. Lou became very ill with cancer while
they were here in Florida. Lou wanted to be at his home in that beautiful state
of New Jersey. Marie honored that wish and took him back home to Cesar Grove to
be with his family and friends. With great sadness we bid adieu to our parted
friend.
Our prayers go out to the family and friends in the demise of a
fellow ham John E. Ward K4IGU a long time resident of Cocoa. John left behind
several pieces of ham equipment. If you are interested in old but
well-preserved equipment please contact John’s son-in-law Mr. Ted Johnson for
details. Mr. Johnson may be reached at 632-6957.
Among our friends leaving the area and going back to their home in
Virginia are Jim W5CIP and his bride Liz. John WB3JBK and Pat KA3AAG will soon
be going back to Maine. We will be looking for these good friends to be back
with us in the fall.
There will be a TARC sponsored class for the Technician Class
License scheduled to begin May 11th. The classes will be held each
Wednesday from 7 to 9 PM at the North Brevard (Titusville) Library on Hopkins
Ave. The classes will be taught by Stephanie K4MVO and Jose KC4VIO and are open
to anyone wishing to acquire the FCC Amateur Radio License. If you know someone
who might be interested in taking this class please have him/her contact
Stephanie at 264-2492 or Jose at 267-5892 or yours truly at 269-2796. One of us
will be able to answer questions you may have.
Our next club meeting will be Tuesday 24th and will be
at the Library. The program will be Field Day. Hope to see you there…. bring a
friend.

How about those BEARS? Now we know a lot about the organization
thanks to Ray, N4LEM, who so graciously brought us up to date at our last
standing room only club meeting.
It was great to see so many of you at our meeting. It was the
largest group of club members that I have seen together in one place for many
years. Hope to see all of you once again at the May 24 meeting. Oh yes, by all
means, bring someone else with you. We just love to see those new faces along
with the ones we have not seen for some time.
Details for the 2005 Field Day will be discussed during the May
meeting. A committee is already working hard to make this year's exercise the
best we ever had. Of course, only you can make it a success. There are many
chores to be completed during the 24 hour communications phase as well as the
set up before and the take down afterward. There is a key position for every
club member, all types and levels of talent are needed so do not be shy. Join
us for the time of your life. Oh yes, just in case you did not know about it:
the Saturday evening dinner and the Sunday morning breakfast at the Field Day
site are unforgettable. See you there.

Abell’s Anecdotes By Pike Abell W4EPU
YET ANOTHER WW-II WAR STORY. Joe was an airplane mechanic who
lived near a US Air Force base somewhere in the United States. He was employed
on the base performing aircraft maintenance. They were preparing a C46 for a
mission to drop supplies to t
he French underground, somewhere in Nazi occupied France. While
they were loading the cargo, Joe was making sure the plane was in tip top
shape. After working several hours and finishing late at night, he sat down
near the rear end of the plane and dozed off.
The crew came out bright and early the next morning. Not knowing
Joe was aboard, they took off. When he woke up they were well on their way. The
Captain decided that there was no turning back. Joe would go along on the
mission.
After making several stops for refueling, they reached the vicinity
of the target area. Just as they were approaching the drop zone, the aircraft
was hit by enemy fire. It was decided to abandon ship. Joe was the first to
bail out, after which the plane stabilized. The Captain decided to abort the
drop mission and head back to England where they landed safely.
In the meantime, Joe landed right in the middle of the French
Underground drop zone. The French just assumed that he was the courier they had
been expecting. They taped a package of Top Secret documents to his body inside
his shirt. They then drove him to the coast to a waiting submarine. Safely
aboard the sub with his Top secret pouch, he was transported to England. From
there he was flown to Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, near Washington, D.
C. At Andrews, he was put in a waiting limousine and whisked to the White
House, thence to the Oval office, where the President was anxiously waiting.
The documents were turned over to the President and Joe was
congratulated and sent back to Andrews Air Force base. From there he was flown
back to his home base.
All of this happened over a period of only three days, during
which time Joe had hardly had a wink of sleep. All he wanted to do when he got
home was sleep. Instead he was met by his family and friends who were worried
about his disappearance. They all wanted to know where he had been. At first he
resisted, stating only that what he did and where he went was Government
business. They persisted, however, until he finally gave up and said:
"Okay. If you must know, I went to France and met with the French
Underground. They gave me a classified pouch which I delivered to the President
of the United States."
NOBODY BELIEVED HIM. WOULD YOU? 73 es 88s Pike
APRIL MINUTES
By KF4HTB Becky Lee
After the usual opening ceremonies, President Bud Hughes K4CWG and
Vice President Jose Ramos KCVIO reported on the success of the TARC booths at
both the KFC picnic and the Kiwanis affair at Fox Lake. Jose then introduced
Ray Cassis N4LEM who talked about BEARS and emergency communications in North
Brevard. He told the club about the $90,000 grant BEARS has been awarded to
purchase a new COM 1 Vehicle, and about the additional income needed to outfit
the vehicle. He explained how they plan to raise the money, and asked for help
from TARC members. They hope to raise another $20,000 to outfit the vehicle.
Donations are tax deductible. Stephanie K4MVO read a letter of recognition from
Kiwanis, and talked about the Boy Scout class she will teaches June 6 – 10. She
asked for volunteers to come to the sessions and talk about their hobby and
what it means to them. Sherry KU4ZO updated the club on the ongoing test
sessions. Mic KI4CFA, was appointed Field Day Chairman to replace Warren W4CEL
who cannot participate due to his work schedule. Field Day is June 25, and will
be discussed at the May meeting.

FIELD DAY is June 25/26!
Can we count on you to help put up and take down the
antennas, get the generators going and to operate both phone and CW? Of course
we enjoy the food and and the fun, but we need to make certain there are
helping hands for both set-up and the teardown. Mic Woltman KI4CFA is chairman
for the event, but he cannot do it alone. We'll be making final plans at the
May 24th meeting. If you want a TARC station on the air for field day volunteer
to help!
