SEPTEMBER
BEARS' REPORT

By Stephanie Phillips, K4MVO

Nancy Smith of the Brevard County Office of Emergency Management reminded the BEARS that it is now the peak of the Hurricane Season and we can expect Isabel to be an issue.  Evacuation Shelters are listed in the phone book.  Those requiring the services of the Special Needs Shelters must be pre-registered.

Nancy thanked all the volunteer emergency communicators for their dedicated service and the many hours of communications support we provide, especially during launches.  And a special thanks to Ozzie, N4SCY, for helping out at the Space Coast Stadium during their Hurricane Awareness Night.  (
Anything for a free hotdog, ehh Ozzie?)

Ray Kassis, N4LEM, advised us that there would be a SET coming up soon, the early part of October.  If you are interested in playing along or have some ideas for an interesting scenario, please let Ed, KG4KVO, or me know.  These training activities can be a lot of fun.  For more information about SETs, check out this Web Site: http://www.arrl.org/FandES/field/setguide.html

Please don't forget that there are launch nets on 147.135, 1/2 hour prior to all launches.  The LISATS members have the K4GCC Repeater, 146.94, back in business.  The new location for this repeater is just south of Rockledge and just east of US 1, at about 300 feet.

Ed and I will soon be contacting all you ARES registered operators in the north area of Brevard county to reconfirm your desire to assist during emergencies and disasters, and your interest in participating in the upcoming SET.

I enjoyed seeing so many of you at the recent Melbourne Ham Fest.  Thanks for stopping by the ARES badging table to say, "Hi!"  And a special thanks to all you newly registered volunteers.  Ed and I will try to get a copy of the new "
TARC Emergency Plans and Procedures" into your hands as soon as possible.

Brevard County ARES/RACES (BEARS) nets on Wednesdays, at 9am and again at 7pm local, on 147.135.  Try checking-in using your emergency communications equipment.  And don't forget to use the Standard Phonetic Alphabet when giving your call sign.  Thank you for your support.
Stephanie Phillips, K4MVO President, BEARS Inc.
